Arrival

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a representative from Across Tanzania Expeditions and transferred to your hotel in Arusha.

In the evening, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a detailed pre-climb briefing. During this session, you will review the itinerary, conduct a full gear check, and receive important safety and acclimatization guidance to ensure you are fully prepared for your trek on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Enjoy dinner and a restful overnight stay as you get ready for the adventure ahead.

Day 1: Arusha → Machame Gate

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate of Mount Kilimanjaro, where registration formalities are completed before the trek begins. From here, you will ascend through the lush rainforest along a winding trail that follows a natural ridge.

At lower elevations, the path can be wet, muddy, and occasionally slippery, making gaiters and trekking poles highly recommended for comfort and stability. As you gain altitude, the forest gradually opens up, offering your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro’s unique ecosystem.

The day concludes at Machame Camp, where you will enjoy a freshly prepared dinner and settle in for your overnight stay, surrounded by the sounds of the mountain rainforest.

Overnight: Machame Camp
Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp

After breakfast, you will leave the lush rainforest behind and continue along an ascending trail, crossing a valley via a steep rocky ridge. The route then turns west, following a scenic river gorge as the landscape opens into the moorland zone of Mount Kilimanjaro.

You will arrive at Shira Camp, where you can relax, enjoy a hot dinner, and settle in for your overnight stay surrounded by expansive mountain views.

Overnight: Shira Camp
Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 3: Shira Camp → Barranco Camp

From the Shira Plateau, you will trek east along a ridge, passing the junction that leads toward Kibo Peak. The route then turns -east toward the iconic Lava Tower, also known as “Shark’s Tooth” (4,650m), where you will experience higher altitude conditions on Mount Kilimanjaro.

After a short break, you will descend past the junction to Arrow Glacier and continue down to Barranco Camp. Although you finish the day at a similar elevation to where you started, this “climb high, sleep low” approach is essential for proper acclimatization, helping your body adjust and preparing you for a successful summit attempt.

Overnight: Barranco Camp
Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you will depart Barranco Camp and tackle the steep Barranco Wall (4,250 m / 13,900 ft), a highlight of the Machame Route. The trail then descends briefly into the Karanga Valley (4,050 m / 13,250 ft) before reaching the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail.

From here, the ascent continues to Barafu Camp, marking the completion of the South Circuit. This route rewards you with spectacular views of the summit from multiple perspectives. At Barafu Camp, you will set up for the night, resting and preparing for your summit attempt, with the majestic peak visible in the distance.

Overnight: Barafu Camp
Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 5: Kilimanjaro Summit → Mweka Camp

In the early hours of the morning (midnight to 2:00 am), you will begin the final push toward the summit, ascending between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers. The trail heads northwest through steep scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim—widely regarded as the most mentally and physically demanding section of the trek.

At Stella Point, you will take a short rest and witness a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro. Faster hikers may even catch the sunrise from the summit itself. From here, snow may appear along the one-hour climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating your summit achievement, the descent begins. You will trek down to Barafu Camp for lunch before continuing to Mweka Camp, where you will rest after an unforgettable day on the mountain.

Overnight: Mweka Camp
Meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 6: Mweka Camp → Arusha

After breakfast, you will complete the descent to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your well-deserved summit certificate. At lower elevations, the trail may be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are recommended for comfort. Light clothing such as shorts and t-shirts will be suitable for this part of the trek.

From Mweka Gate, your private vehicle will transfer you back to Arusha, marking the successful conclusion of your unforgettable Kilimanjaro adventure.
